This essay is part of the materials developed for the CARES National Mentoring Movement, which seeks to promote the well-being of African American youth through targeted group mentoring discussions. This material is also included in the Wellness Mentoring Circles for Young Parents manual available for download on the NMRC site.

In this essay, author Jeannine Amber offers a series of tips and considerations for mentoring pregnant and parenting teens. Topics include compassionate listening, speaking with purpose, providing a safe environment and relationship, and goal setting, among others. Although the advice here is directed toward supporting mentors working with pregnant and parenting teens, it also has potential applicability to supporting other vulnerable groups of youth.

This resource is intended to build the knowledge and skills of mentors working with teen parents, particularly African Americans.
