    This comprehensive guide, created by the New Zealand Youth Mentoring Network for New Zealand’s mentoring programs, provides benchmarks for programs of all sizes to help them deliver quality services and establish safe mentoring relationships for youth. It is written for all mentoring practitioners, including those in school-settings and those managing mentoring programs embedded within other services. The guide includes information about program practices and protocols that can be put in place to support mentors and mentees and promote safety as well as recommendations in the areas of program design, planning, management, and evaluation. It also includes information specific to serving Māori and Pasifika youth in cultural context.

    To support mentoring programs in delivering safe and effective mentoring services for youth.

    As part of the Children’s Action Plan (CAP) released in October 2012, the New Zealand Government announced a set of actions to improve the identification, support and protection of vulnerable children and young people. This included the promotion of youth mentoring and in 2013 the Ministry of Health, Children’s Action Plan, New Zealand Youth Mentoring Network (NZYMN) and the Ministry of Youth Development partnered together to develop Safe Practice Guidelines for Youth Mentoring Programmes. In June 2016, the New Zealand Youth Mentoring Network (NZYMN) launched this resource, the second edition of the Guide to Effective and Safe Practice in Youth Mentoring, Aotearoa New Zealand.
