Resources for Mentoring Programs
The National Mentoring Resource Center provides a collection of mentoring handbooks, curricula, manuals, and other resources that practitioners can use to implement and further develop program practices.
This growing collection of resources have all been reviewed by the National Mentoring Resource Center Research Board. They all show some level of evidence*, however are broken into two tiers depending on the extent. Most items are directly available for download here or elsewhere online. Mentor Guides and Handouts Title Summary The 4 S’s Interview
This interview activity provides questions mentors can ask a young person to help get to express care and get to know them better.
Building Relationships: A Guide for New Mentors This guide for mentors provides an overview of basic skills and concepts that may contribute to effective mentoring relationships. After summarizing what may make a mentoring relationship successful, the guide reviews ten recommended principles of mentoring, and includes questions for mentors to consider as they reflect on their mentoring relationships, and handouts for mentors. Child Opportunity Index 2.0 The Child Opportunity Index (COI) 2.0 measures neighborhood resources and conditions that matter for children’s healthy development. COI 2.0 allows users to compare the level of opportunity that neighbor-hoods provide for children across the U.S. College Positive Mentoring Toolkit This online toolkit for mentors includes ready-to-use activities, checklists, and background information that can support mentees of all ages as they think about, and plan for, postsecondary education. Conversations About Masculinity: How Mentors Can Support Young Men of Color This detailed guide highlights strategies that programs and mentors can use to support the development, social identity, and gender expression of young men of color (YMOC). Discovering the Possibilities: “C”ing Your Future This 12-module curriculum and activity guide is designed to assist mentors in working with middle school youth to explore postsecondary education and possible careers. Eat Well Stay Active Have Fun: A Guide for Mentors This mentor guide provides information and guidance on how to incorporate healthy eating and physical activity into a mentor-mentee relationship. Engaging, Ensuring and Elevating: Essential Strategies for Mentoring Pregnant and Parenting Teens This essay was developed as part of the CARES National Mentoring Movement work to promote the well-being of pregnant and parenting African American youth through targeted group mentoring discussions. The essay reviews several strategies for mentors to keep in mind as they engage youth in meaningful discussions about their experiences and the world around them. Experience Corps Mentor Toolkit This handbook reviews concepts, skills and activities that mentors can use with their mentees to support academic and life success, with an emphasis on social-emotional growth. Experience Journey Map: A New Experience Design Tool for Structuring Youth Activities This design tool/experience journey map was developed to assist youth professionals in planning engagement, immersion, and absorption activities. Exploring Possible Sparks with Your Mentee This handout provides a list of activities that mentors can do with their mentees to explore their mentees’ interests. Fact Sheets on Mentoring and Youth Development This series of three Fact Sheets provides both mentoring programs and mentors with basic information about positive youth development principles and how to build them into mentoring settings and relationships. Guidance for Mentors on Talking to Mentees about Current Events This tip sheet outlines strategies that mentors (and other youth-serving adults) can use to facilitate conversations with youth about current events, especially events that may be traumatic or difficult to talk about.
Isolation Without Loneliness: Staying Emotionally Connected in Times of Physical Distance This resource provides guidance on ways mentors can stay connected with their mentees during a time of physical distancing. K-12 Journey Map This tool is intended to help youth and mentors track important milestones as youth make the journey from school to post-secondary education and career planning. Mentor Guide for Youth Registered Apprenticeship Programs This introductory guide provides mentors who advise youth apprentices or support apprenticeship programs at work with tips, guidance, and resources. The MentorConnections Manual: School-Based Mentoring for Military-Connected Students The MentorConnections Manual is a resource dedicated to supporting and mentoring military-connected students and youth. The manual includes useful information insights about military-connected youth and their families along with guidance on effective approaches to mentoring military-connected youth. Mentoring Fact Sheet: Gender-Specific Approaches in Mentoring This Mentoring Fact Sheet from the U.S. Department of Education’s Mentoring Resource Center explains how mentoring practitioners can help mentors understand gender difference and the potential impact of gender on their mentoring relationships. It reviews tips and strategies for providing ongoing training and support on gender-informed mentoring approaches that are intended to help mentors develop effective and positive relationships with their mentees. Mentoring Fact Sheet: Overcoming Relationship Pitfalls This Mentoring Fact Sheet from the U.S. Department of Education’s Mentoring Resource Center reviews common challenges that arise throughout the life of a mentoring relationship with a young person and provides recommendations for how mentors can anticipate and manage these challenges in the best interest of the youth with whom they are working. Mentoring Guide for Life Skills This extensive guide provides a framework for mentoring young women and girls with a focus on developing life skills. This tip sheet explains the relevance of intersectionality in the mentoring relationship and provides suggestions for being aware of and responsive to intersectionality in relationships with mentees. Mentoring Youth Impacted by Opioid Use and Misuse This resource provides a high-level introduction for mentors, programs, and caring adults seeking to understand the opioid epidemic and its potential intersections with impacted young people and mentoring. Peer Mentoring Handbook This resource offers advice, strategies, and other information to older youth who will be serving as peer mentors to younger children in school and community settings. Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence as a Mentor This concise guide reviews effective strategies for mentors to help them to respond to a mentee’s disclosure of a sexual assault or sexual trauma. Simple Interactions Tool: Noticing and Appreciating Human Interactions across Developmental Settings The Simple Interactions Tool is a relationship building improvement tool that provides common and accessible language to talk about and reflect on interactions in practice. The Tool serves as a visual representation, highlighting the four dimensions of developmental interactions: Connection, Reciprocity, Inclusion, and Opportunity to Grow, all of which have been shown to predict youth-adult relationship quality. Tip Sheet for Mentors: Supporting Children Who Have an Incarcerated Parent This “tip sheet” provides information about the experiences of children who have an incarcerated parent, to help mentors provide support and understanding through their mentoring relationship. Tools for Mentoring Adolescents This series of 10 fact sheets for mentors reviews many critical topics related to mentoring youth across the adolescent years. Mental Skills Training Toolkits This toolkit provides tools and evidence-based recommendations for support mentors in creating emotionally safe environments to help young people build their mental skills for life.
Ongoing Training for Mentors: Twelve Interactive Sessions for U.S. Department of Education Mentoring Programs This training guide offers 12 activities that each address a key topic that can come up as mentoring relationships progress. These trainings are intended to support mentors as they encounter challenges and difficult circumstances while working with their mentees. Preparing for Mentoring Program The Preparing for Mentoring Program is an online pre-match training program designed for prospective mentors to learn about their expectations and motivations, understand their mentoring role, prepare for meeting with their mentee, and be equipped with strategies for developing a positive, long-term relationship with their mentee. Ready to Go: Mentor Training Toolkit This resource offers a variety of training activities for both pre-match and ongoing training of adult and peer mentors. Men in Mentoring Toolkit This resource provides recruitment messages, outreach templates, and sample talking points for recruiting male volunteers to serve as mentors. In addition to the samples provided, the toolkit offers podcasts of practitioners explaining how to craft messages that will reach men and their tips for encouraging specific groups to approach men about the mentoring opportunities in their communities. -
Resources for Mentees and Families Title Summary Finding Mentors, Finding Success This guidebook for mentees teaches youth how to seek out appropriate mentors who can help them with their next steps in life once leaving a mentoring program or other system of support. Peer Mentoring Guide Written by former peer mentors and youth mentees of the NMRC Youth Advisory Council, this guide serves to inform and support young people interested in peer mentoring. Current peer mentors and mentees, aspiring peer mentors and prospective mentees, and organizers/facilitators of peer mentoring programs can all find helpful tips to foster healthy and effective mentoring relationships to best support themselves and other youth. Preparing For Your Mentoring Relationship as a Mentee This one-pager is for prospective youth mentees who may be interested in joining a mentoring program as a mentee. Written and informed by former and current youth mentees, this resource provides tips for prospective youth mentees to consider as they prepare for a mentoring relationship. Preparing for Your Mentoring Relationship Video This brief video features youth explaining what it’s like to be in a mentoring relationship and tips for how youth entering mentoring programs can get the most out of the experience. Supporting YouthBuild Students in Mentoring Relationships This customizable Word document was originally designed for YouthBuild programs with the intention of providing information to parents, caregivers, and other supportive adults about the student’s new relationship with a volunteer mentor. Center for Evidenced-Based Mentoring
The Center for Evidence-Based Mentoring is a collaboration between MENTOR and the University of Massachusetts-Boston led by leading mentoring researcher Dr. Jean Rhodes. The goal of the Center is to advance both the production and uptake of evidence-based practice in the field of youth mentoring. The Center accomplishes this goal through the production of research, the facilitation of collaborations, and the dissemination of evidence-based resources.
Center for Interdisciplinary Mentoring Research
The PSU Center for Interdisciplinary Mentoring Research, led by Dr. Thomas Keller, was created in 2010 to advance the field of mentoring, nationally and internationally, through innovative and rigorous research, education and knowledge sharing, and partnerships with organizations providing services.
OJJDP National Training and Technical Assistance Center
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)’s National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) delivers, brokers, and promotes the highest quality training and technical assistance to the juvenile justice field and its related criminal justice initiatives by utilizing a vast array of training and technical assistance resources funded through OJJDP and its partners.
